A Brief History of
Sigma Pi Lambda
On May 23, 2018, eight brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Arthur Hairston III, Christopher Jackson, Jabari Jones, Tyrone McCloud, Cornelius Matthews, Tavares Parker, Marques Wilkes and Renaldo Walters, met in an effort to increase the bonds of the brotherhood, reclaim inactive brothers into the Fraternity and strengthen the bridge between undergraduate and graduate chapters locally. During this meeting, the Alpha Brothers Coalition (ABC) was formed with the goal of chartering another Alpha Phi Alpha chapter to provide a greater presence in Northeast Florida. (Clay, Duval and St. John’s county)
After the initial meeting, these brothers, affectionately known as the “Guiding Lights“, met again on Tuesday, June 12, 2018, to consolidate their chartering application efforts and plan a “Back-to-Brotherhood” social that would be held on June 23, 2018, at 6:00 p.m. This social event was a huge success with over 20 brothers attending; much more than other reclamation events that had previously been done in the area. The brotherhood, excitement, engagement and commitment exhibited at the ABC event was a clear indication that the brothers were on the right track and destined to accomplish chartering a chapter in a small window of time.
As a result of the efforts of the Guiding Lights and other brothers who joined them, the Sigma Pi Lambda Chapter, seated in Orange Park, Florida, was born on July 27, 2019, after the application to charter the new chapter received an affirmative vote by the Board of Directors and was confirmed by vote of the General Body during the 95th General Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Seated in Orange Park, Florida, the Sigma Pi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. will continue be a beacon of light and hope by providing service and advocacy for the Tri-County areas of Clay, Duval and St. John’s county.
